Three New Therapy Games for Even Greater Training Motivation

tyroS – Software that brings therapy to life

tyroS is the central therapy software powering many devices such as Amadeo, Diego, Pablo, Tymo, Myro, Omego, and Lexo. It combines motor, sensory, and cognitive training with gamification, biofeedback, and an intuitive user interface.

With the latest tyroS 6.8 update, we are expanding the training portfolio with three new therapy games designed to support key functional abilities while bringing even more variety and motivation into everyday therapy sessions.

The new games support, among others:

Ski Champion – Winter sports fun for gait training with Lexo

With Ski Champion, Lexo introduces a new therapy game that transforms repetitive gait training into a motivating winter sports experience.

Inspired by our Austrian roots, patients guide a virtual skier through slalom gates. This is achieved through rhythmic stepping and weight shifting – key components of gait training.

Along the way, playful details add extra motivation: if patients master the course skillfully, they can even spray snow onto the Tyro dogs waiting at the edge of the slope.

Bricks Breaker – The arcade classic for attention and reaction

The new game Bricks Breaker brings a timeless arcade classic into therapy. Its gameplay is simple, intuitive, and easy to learn – making it ideal for motivating patients right from the start.

Patients control a paddle to direct a ball toward bricks on the screen. By breaking the bricks, they collect points, unlock bonus stars, and progress through increasingly challenging levels.

Thanks to adjustable screen graphics, the game can be tailored to the patient’s needs – ranging from minimal to more complex visual stimuli.

Paddle Boat – Rhythm, coordination, and playful movement

With Paddle Boat, patients enter a calm yet engaging water environment. The goal is to steer a boat through floating navigation gates, with the challenge increasing at each new level.

The game combines coordination tasks with rhythmic movement. The visual rhythm helps patients better plan and execute their movements.

Here as well, the screen graphics can be adjusted, allowing therapists to optimally adapt the game to each patient.

With these new games, tyroS expands its therapy portfolio with additional motivating training options designed to support both motor and cognitive abilities.

New for Lexo and Omego: Heart rate is now tracked in real time via a HR sensor. This allows therapy intensity and workload to be adapted to the individual’s target range – whether the goal is endurance improvement, activation, or controlled cardiovascular training.

What does robotics-assisted rehabilitation actually feel like in practice? Around 24 participants from 8 different facilities across the DACH region had the chance to find out during our workshop on April 5, held in the Aktivräume of Johann Zachskorn. The goal: not just to talk about robotics in neurorehabilitation, but to truly experience it.

Among the attendees: outpatient and inpatient facilities, experienced users, and curious newcomers – all united by one common mission: improving therapy.

 

Knowledge from Practice, for Practice

Following a warm welcome from our host Johann Zachskorn, the day kicked off with a brief introduction to our Tyromotion systems. Johann then shared fascinating insights from his everyday work with robotics-assisted therapy, highlighting key success factors, hands-on control concepts, and how robotics is reshaping modern therapy. The engaged audience made one thing clear: this topic sparks interest and inspiration.

 

Technology You Can Feel: Hands-on with Tyromotion

The afternoon was all about interaction – trying out, discussing, and testing a selection of our robotic and sensor-based therapy devices that are regularly used in the Aktivräume:

  • Pablo enhances traditional exercises with biofeedback, objective assessments, and gamification – delivering precise gait parameters for personalized therapy planning.
  • Lexo makes robotic gait training more accessible – with quick setup, high activity, and evidence-based therapy.
  • Amadeo focuses on grasp training – even in cases of spasticity or high muscle tone – and eases the repetitive workload in finger-hand therapy.
  • Tymo enables standardized postural assessments in standing – flexible and versatile in everyday use.
  • Diego brings freedom of movement in all directions. With its innovative patient support and intelligent weight compensation, Diego enables functional training in a three-dimensional space – from proximal to distal – and helps patients relearn how to handle everyday objects.
  • Omego Plus is much more than a therapy bike. It combines the features of a stepper, leg press, and sensor-based training in one system – targeting gait parameters such as balance, strength, endurance, and neurocognitive control across all phases of rehabilitation.

 

Takeaway: A Day That Made a Difference

The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive – both in terms of content and technical experience. The combination of expert talks, one-on-one support, and hands-on interaction turned the workshop into a truly impactful learning experience. Especially encouraging: in addition to seasoned users, many participants with no prior experience in robotic therapy joined us – a strong signal that robotics is gaining ground in modern rehabilitation.

FH Kärnten: Experience the Future Up Close

How does it feel when cutting-edge rehabilitation technology meets game-based therapy?

Students from the third semester of the Medical Engineering bachelor’s program at University of applied sience Kärnten got to experience the answer firsthand during their visit to our headquarters in Graz.

With exciting insights into digital rehabilitation approaches with Maya, they immersed themselves in the world of robot-assisted therapy at Tyromotion. In addition to hands-on demonstrations of our innovative software solutions, the students had the opportunity to try out the technology themselves and see how their theoretical knowledge is applied in practice.

We are proud to support the next generation of medical technology experts from FH Kärnten on their journey and to explore new perspectives in rehabilitation together. Because the future starts right here.

Last week, we had the pleasure of giving an inspiring talk at the Döpfer School in Munich. The vocational school for occupational therapy, speech therapy and physiotherapy provided the perfect setting to talk about a forward-looking topic: Robotics in rehabilitation.

The students showed great interest in this innovative field and benefited from both practical and theoretical insights. The focus was on the many possibilities that rehabilitation robotics opens up in therapy and the benefits that this technology offers for both therapists and patients.

We were delighted to share our knowledge of modern technologies in rehabilitation and inspire the professionals of tomorrow!

Research Study: Advancing Therapy for Children with Hemiparesis

We are proud to see our Diego and Myro as part of a very promising retrospective study exploring the effect of modified Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (mCIMT), Bimanual Intensive Therapy (BIT), and exergame-based robotics to enhance limitations in children with hemiparesis. 23 children with upper limb impairments underwent 30 hours of intensive therapy over an 8-day intensive camp.

 

Highlights

  • The group-based day camp model took place for 4 half-days per week for 2 weeks (30 h over 8 days)
  • PULIT effectively increases children’s dexterity, ADL performance, and achieves individual goals (85.7% GAS).
  • PULIT reaches an equal therapy effect in shorter time period and with fewer hours as previous RCTs using state-of-the-art-therapy for children with (severe) upper limb impairments.

 

Intensive therapy programs like the PULIT program might be an effective booster session for children to learn relevant ADLs and gain functional independence.

New study: Promising results from the first Lexo study

The very first study publication worldwide with our Lexo was conducted at the REHA ZENTRUM MÜNSTER, Austria. The study offers valuable insights into patients´ needs and identifies necessary adjustments to ensure that robot-assisted gait training is both enjoyable and effective for patients. The results create a better understanding of robot-assisted gait training with an end-effector device in general and with the Lexo in specific.

The mixed-methods feasibility study aimed to explore the feasibility, acceptability, goal attainment, and preliminary effects of robot-assisted gait training in patients with common and rare neurological diseases. Twenty-eight patients with stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson´s disease, spinal cord injury, spinocerebellar ataxia, acute/chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, and motor neuron disease were included in the study. Patients received robot-assisted gait training on the Lexo for 45 minutes, 4x/week, for 4 weeks.

 

Highlights

  • Lexo training was highly accepted by patients with various neurological diseases, feasible, and safe.
  • Goal attainment was high as well as results showed overall and clinically meaningful changes in walking.
  • Improvements in number of steps, walking speed, and functional mobility were observed.
